Johanna Mulder Honorary Visual Artist of March
Margaux was born in Regina Saskatchewan in October of 1965. She moved to British Columbia in 1974 then she and her family moved to Creston in 1985 where she and her husband reside today. As far back as Margaux can remember she has always enjoyed drawing. She is a self-taught artist and has had no formal training other than the art classes that she took while attending high school. Margaux is registered with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. She is blind in one eye and has about 10% of her vision in the other. Her preferred medium is pencil but she has also worked with colored pencils, pen & ink and acrylic paint. Margaux says that for her drawing is very empowering and a great way for her to relieve stress, she is inspired by the beauty of nature, gothic architecture, art nouveau and her Lakota heritage. When Margaux was twenty years old she discovered that drawing through a very strong magnifying glass opened a whole new doorway for her and dramatically improved the quality of her work. Most of Margaux’s intricately detailed drawings have taken between 15 to 40 hours to complete. Fulfillment is her most memorable piece. It took several months to complete this drawing. During that time her grandma Christina passed away so it was a very emotional time for her. The oldest and most cherished piece of artwork that Margaux has is a beaded ball that her grandma Christina (Lakota) made. Margaux has set aside her artwork and is currently illustrating and designing a book about Lakota history from her grandfather’s manuscripts. She states, “My grandpa passed away before his book came to fruition so I want to fulfill his dream and get his book published.” Margaux’s message to others is, ”Don’t waste your time envying other people’s talents because it will prevent you from discovering your own!” Margaux’s artwork has been displayed at Cottage Crafters, Park Studio Gallery and Toltec Gallery.
