Gabriel Dinim
Visual Artist of the Month of July Gabriel Dinim Born in 1951 in Paris France, Gabriel immigrated to Canada in 1973. His studio and darkroom is set up on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake, in beautiful British Columbia. Gabriel has been enjoying creating portraits for 30 years. He enjoys working under conditions that require careful preparations. Gabriel taught himself photography by reading lots of technical manuals and he would like to learn more about color dye transfer. The large format photography Gabriel learned under apprenticeship.

Gabriel doesn’t have a favorite memory but finds constant beauty within every portrait he does. The archetype, that one image in amongst a beautiful setting that he focuses on and brings to life, is what influences Gabriel’s art. A favorite portrait of Gabriel’s is a picture of Ian Tung (Chinese musician) improvising, a piece that he captured in a motion of spontaneity. Gabriel is currently working on portraits of landscapes; he enjoys his job so much he says it is like he has a love affair with his work. Gabriel would rather be a poor artist than work in something he does not love. He is now fortunate enough to work full time in the photography field.

The most interesting piece of Gabriel’s is a portrait that is five years old called “Drive”, the hidden meaning, excess consumption. “Herald and Maude” is Gabriel’s favorite movie and “The Last of the Just” is his favorite book. A tip Gabriel would like to share with other artist’s is “Be deliberate and spontaneous!”

You can view Gabriel’s portraits at Park Studio Gallery in Creston BC and at www.parkstudio.net in the gallery. His portraits are also at Jewellery by Gerold in Nelson BC and you can visit him on his website at www.lightmountainphotography.com.
